- Character Proportions: Letter height must be between 5/8 inch (16 mm) and 2 inches (51 mm) to ensure comfortable finger tracing.
- Grade 2 Braille: Contracted Grade 2 Braille must be located directly below the corresponding uppercase text with rounded or domed dots.
- High Visual Contrast: Signs must provide at least 70% visual contrast (e.g., crisp white text on deep navy, or black text on brushed silver).
- Non-Glare Matte Finish: Glare from overhead lighting can obstruct reading for individuals with low vision. High-gloss finishes are prohibited.
2. ADA Mounting Height & Wall Placement Rules
Proper mounting location is strictly enforced by NYC building inspectors and accessibility auditors:
- Latch-Side Wall Placement: Signs identifying permanent rooms must be mounted on the wall adjacent to the latch side of the door.
- Height Standards (48” to 60”): The baseline of the lowest tactile character must be at least 48 inches above the finished floor, and the highest character must not exceed 60 inches.
- Clear Floor Space: A 18” x 18” minimum clear floor space centered on the sign must be maintained, outside the arc of the door swing.
