PREMIUM DURATRANS & BACKLIT FILM PRINTING
Command Attention in Lobbies with Backlit Duratrans Prints
Duratrans printing has its origins as a proprietary Eastman Kodak silver-halide photographic transparency film developed in the late 1970s and registered in 1982. Originally exposed with high-precision RGB laser imaging systems (such as Durst Lambda or Lightjet imagesetters) and developed via wet chemical processors, it achieved an apparent resolution of up to 4000 DPI. Today, while "Duratrans" remains a widely genericized trademark in the New York City commercial printing market, modern production relies on high-resolution digital wide-format inkjet engines utilizing UV-curable, solvent, or latex inks, meeting or exceeding traditional halide visual standards at a fraction of the cost.
Physical substrate performance depends heavily on the properties of the film. We utilize premium polyester (PET) bases from 8 mil to 15 mil thick, providing absolute mechanical stability against heat-induced sagging inside low-profile LED snap frames. To prevent "hotspots" from raw LED clusters, our premium prints feature integrated translucent white bases containing micro-dispersed titanium dioxide diffusing agents. For clear PET applications, we mount prints with independent frosted diffuser panels made of cast acrylic or polycarbonate, scattering light rays evenly for a flawless glow.

Prepress File Standards & Technical Specifications
| Technical Parameter | Specification Requirement | Design Rationale & Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Spatial Resolution | 300 DPI at 100% output scale | Prevents pixelation; maintains crisp text/details in close-up retail environments. |
| Color Space | CMYK Native | Ensures accurate color reproduction; prevents unexpected shifts during RIP processing. |
| Bleed Margins | 0.125 inches on all outer edges | Accommodates mechanical cutting tolerances; prevents white lines on finished cuts. |
| Vector Treatment | Convert all fonts to outlines / curves | Prevents font substitution errors if the production system does not have local font files. |
| Photoshop PSDs | Merge visible layers into flat image | Prevents layer shifting or rendering errors across different design software versions. |
| Multiple Files | Compress into a single ZIP archive | Protects files from corruption during upload and ensures all assets stay grouped together. |
Backlit Ink Density: Double Strike vs. 3-Layer Day/Night
Standard reflective prints reflect ambient light bouncing off a white base. Backlit displays receive light directly from behind, which washes out standard 100% ink densities. To achieve rich colors, we employ two high-fidelity engineering protocols:
Double-Strike Method (Single-Pass, 200% Ink)
Our RIP software lays down double the ink volume in a single pass to achieve rich density when lit. Note: When the lightbox is switched off, the print will appear darker/muddy because the dense color layers block ambient light.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| CMYK Ink Layer (Double Volume) | <- 200% Ink
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| Translucent PET Substrate |
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
Multi-Layer Day/Night Method (3-Layer UV Print)
We simultaneously print three perfectly aligned layers using flatbed UV curing. When the LEDs are unlit, the front CMYK reflects ambient light normally. When lit, both CMYK layers glow in tandem with perfect density.
+-----------------------------------------------------------+
| CMYK Color Layer (Front) | <- Normal unlit reflections

| White Flood Diffusing Layer | <- Built-in optical diffuser

LED Snap Frame & Installation Protocols
Commercial backlit sign lightboxes utilize state-of-the-art extruded aluminum LED snap frames. Engineered for rapid graphic changes, these frames feature spring-loaded mitered edges and an ultra-slim, ADA-compliant profile (only 3/4" to 0.8" cabinet depth). Edge-lit strips injected into laser-etched cast acrylic Light Guide Plates (LGP) distribute light evenly, completely eliminating hotspots. Systems run on low-voltage 12VDC or 24VDC, backed by UL-listed certification for commercial building compliance.
Successful backlit installations require strict physical handling guidelines. Technicians must wear lint-free gloves to avoid fingerprint smudges visible only under rear illumination. For standard LED snap frames, film inserts are installed completely dry. Permanent glass or window mounts require a wet application using specialized slip fluid (such as Window Juice) squeegeed from the center out. When tiling oversized graphics, standard practice demands a 1/4" overlap seam rather than a butt joint, preventing light leaks from thermal expansion.
NYC Technical Field Checklist
✔ Edge-Lit LGP Acrylic: Laser-etched cast grid for perfect illumination.
✔ Lint-Free Gloves: Mandated for all handlers to prevent rear grease marks.
✔ 1/4" Overlap Seams: Overlapped tiles to prevent expansion light leaks.
✔ Wet Application Fluid: Squeegee-out window application for clear PET mounts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Duratrans, and how does it differ from standard prints?
Duratrans is a premium translucent backlit film. Unlike standard paper or white vinyl which block light or produce uneven shadows, Duratrans features a specialized diffusion layer that distributes LED light perfectly across the print face. It prevents hotspots and ensures outstanding color vibrancy, high contrast, and photographic clarity when backlit. Why do colors sometimes look washed out on backlit signs?
Backlit illumination dilutes colors if a print is produced with standard ink density. We prevent this by utilizing advanced flatbed UV printers with double-strike print modes, laying down twice the amount of color pigments to ensure the graphics remain rich, saturated, and highly vibrant when illuminated.Do you provide the complete lightbox frame hardware?
Yes. We supply premium aluminum snap-open frames and custom-sized silicone edge graphic (SEG) fabric frame systems complete with energy-efficient UL-listed LED light bars and low-voltage class 2 power adapters, offering a complete turnkey display. Can Duratrans prints be installed in outdoor lightboxes?
Yes. Our Duratrans films are printed with waterproof, elastic UV inks that will not fade, chip, or run when exposed to moisture. However, for outdoor installations, they must be housed inside a sealed, waterproof lightbox enclosure to protect the electrical wiring and LED light bars.
